Chapter I

Introduction;

Over the past few decades, teenage pregnancy has become a public concern which has generated a great deal of attention in the locality. Increasing awareness of the social and economic consequences of teenage pregnancy has led to a consensus opinion among policy makers  and the public that teenage pregnancy and child bearing is a significant social problem. It has been linked to an array of other social issues, such as welfare dependency, child health and well-being, out of wedlock births, fatherhood responsibility, child abuse and neglect, school drop-out and workforce development. (Torivillas, The Philippine Star, 2013).

There was a strong agreement that teenage pregnancy rate is still on the increase and and every increased there has an additional consequences of abortions and fetus losses and yet reducing the number of births by this age group remains an important goal, Scott (1981).

The frequency of teenage pregnancy among the youth is alarming and has become more or less a fact of life in many nations of the world including Philippines. This remains both culturally deleterious and personally destructive. Teenage pregnancy has lots of effects on Educational Development of teenagers who are victims of this phenomenon. The Philippine government and other religious institutions  are studying every angle to look for ways to reduce untimely pregnancy among teenager. These are many factors which have been recognized by researchers and authors as being responsible for teenage pregnancy. It has been noted and well documented that today’s teenagers face more sexual temptation than previous generations. They seem to be more aware of sex and susceptible to the dangers of illicit sex. Today’s society is more bombarded with sexually oriented materials in the environment. The teenager are more vulnerable to sexual temptations. Health and Home, Philippines, Pregnant at 16, p.12-13 &22).

According to Eruesgbefe, (2005). “Today’s teenagers have become more sexually active and promiscuous compared to their age mates of some thirty, forty or fifty years ago in the Nigerian situation”. He also asserted that, “The gradual departures from the traditions, customs and religious doctrine of the different ethnic groups on the premise of civilization have been largely responsible for this. Community and families must work hand in hand to shield their teenagers against these phenomena. Increases in both health and social problems are products of uncontrollable multiple sex partners among teenagers. Mainly because the youth cannot control their emotional feelings, they rush into untimely sex, in the belief that the act will be undetected.

According to Albano (2001). In the Philippines, usually in a family, this category are not taught family life education by their parents and schools because of the sensitivity of the issue, this is contrary to the wide assumption that family life education is on. In practice, however, not much of sex education is taught in every Filipino family. Existing government family planning programs have been directed principally to married couples.

Maramag is still a growing community, cases of teenage pregnancy usually become a big issue to the neighbors and to the whole community. The family of the victim is in trauma discovering that their teenager was some months on her way already. Almost everybody is blaming the pregnant teenager of the consequences of her misdeeds. They focused their judgment to the victim but they did not bother to ask why and what were behind of indulging sex at teens and got pregnant not at the right time. The Philippine government through some of its agencies like Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)  and Department of Education (DepEd), introduced some strategies to minimize the increasing cases of pregnancy as observed after a decade in the Philippines. Sex education is being incorporated to the subject matters in school. RH bill could be a big help to let the teenagers know how to act about sex. Filipino families and communities is properly informed about their responsibilities to their youngsters with regards to sex.  While teenagers wherever they are must be reached to educate and be well informed how to counter early pregnancy.

Religious sectors are also showing concerns about the teenagers by intensifying the activities at the church and detour  their interest while they are still young and not yet prepare to face the consequences brought about early sex. The churches now are also don’t want to left behind on nurturing the youths by instilling  to their minds  that early sex out of wed luck has consequences and the consequences hurt more than waiting. (Health and Home pp.13,2003).

The researcher of this paper hope that after the study, she can impart some important strategies  and information she gained to the community, to the teachers, school administrators, parents and to the teenagers on how to minimize teenage pregnancy to students and out-of-school youth in Maramag, Bukidnon.

    • Shirodica, as coach I instil to the minds of my clients the purpose of their study by answering 3 questions or more to complete their significance of study in chapter 1.
      Example of 1st question:

      1. What study or topics you want to research, who are your respondents, where are you going to study and inclusive date of study?

Answer and serves as your first paragraph of your “significance of your study”:

The study must be conducted for the effects of good study habits of Combi-Grade two pupils in Titay, Zamboaga Sibugay, year 2016-2017

      2nd question is the following:

      2. Who benefited this study?
Answer and serves as 2nd stanza of your significance:

This study is beneficial to the pupils, teachers, administrators and researchers who have the interest to improve the pupils’ performance especially in academic subjects.

      3rd question:

How the pupils can benefit from this study?
Answer and serves as 3rd stanza of the significance of the study:

      3. The result of this study will be applied to the pupils to make their performance improve at school especially in their economic subjects. This is one way to know how important the good study habit to the pupils especially to those who belong to a combi-class.

4th, 5th and more questions would be :

How would this study beneficial to the teachers, administrators and parents? Then proceed for additional stanzas.

    • Dear Ely,
The concern of the “introduction” in this study is pointing to both the out of school youth and youth who are in school. The survey was made about the educational development of pregnant teenagers in response to their chances to pursue their studies and or to go back to school to those who were currently studying and out of school youth respectively.

You can use the above “introduction” as one of your reference with regards to the condition and or how vulnerable are our out of school youths to be pregnant now these days.

The background of this thesis “Teenage Pregnancy” can be found at the 3rd and 4th stanza of the said introduction. It tells that the study that you choose about “Teenage Pregnancy” has some existing previous study. As thesis coach, I will give you a clue and I refer you to this article https://gabrinezgemina0.wordpress.com/2014/03/13/chapter-1-on-thesis-making-background/, this will help you so much and it will explain you what is really the “background”. This will give you more knowledge on how to make your “introduction” and out of giving eight (8) statements, the said “introduction” would be through but this will depend upon the approach of your teacher or adviser.

      • Dear Scene Stealer,

The following are the Related studies of Teenage Pregnancy. Please text on this no. +639268212800 if you have still something to clarify.

        Effects of Premarital sex

Albano, September, 2010. As a whole, the situation is grim for pregnant teenage girls who are in school and their babies. Forced with few options with no where to turn to, many girls find various ways to get rid of the fetus. In a few cases, some simply disguise their bellies and hide their pregnancy from everyone, and the victim will start to make lost interest at school, absenteeism from school which resulted to low and failure on test and quizzes and finally prefers to stay home. As months move on, a teenage pregnant student will start to disguise their bellies and hide their pregnancy to their schoolmates and to everyone, but everything will not just end that way, the pressure must go on and being pregnant this will effect on their school development, others will decide to quit school for the main time and back to school after pregnancy.

        Effects after pregnancy

Common Reasons behind Teenage Pregnancy in the Philippines, Oct 3rd, 2011; “Teenagers could possibly become pregnant as a result of the deficiency of decent educational programs, hindrances from being able to acquire birth control methods, sexual assault or rape, economic reasons, and cultural rituals and that is usually handed from family to another family. Teenage Pregnancy brings about life-changing outcomes and commitments. Their studies and also ambitions will most likely be hampered as they will need to concentrate their attention on parenting their child or supporting their new family.”
The above literature is relevance to the study for after mentioning the possible factors behind, it penetrated to the effects brought about by pregnancy against the school performance of the teenagers which would be temporarily hampered or it could be reason of total separation from school to give priority of rearing and parenting their incoming child.

        Economic Status and Teenage pregnancy

        (K. Torres, September 2012- National campaign to prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy) Teenage pregnancy is occurring in an adolescent girl between the ages of 13 to 19. Socioeconomic is one factor in which is the social-economic experiences that help mold one’s personality, attitudes and lifestyle. It can also define regions and neighborhoods. Socioeconomic factors also include the ethnicity, and sense of community.
Families with low economic status often have less success in preparing their young children for school because they typically don’t have access to promote, support young children’s development and provide them with everything they needed. Studies have shown that girls raised in poverty, in single-parent homes, and by parents with lower levels of education are more likely to be pregnant and to be teenage mothers.
Teens often feel pressure to make friends and fit in their peers during adolescence. Many times these teens let their friends influence their decision to have sex even though they do not fully understand the consequences associated with it. Teenagers have sex as a way to appear cool and sophisticated, but in some cases it ends up in unplanned teen pregnancy.

    • Dear michellegallarte,

There are so many ways to control the teenage pregnancy and this will be avoided when the concern will cooperate. The concern one’s are the following:

      1. Parents – must be smart enough to bring their children. Family bonding is necessary all the time so that the daughters must be open to tell anything that bothers or something to share that would be failures and success in life. Parents must be smart enough to understand their daughters on teenage. Parents must be aware what environment did their daughters are roaming by diverting their interest if ever they tend to have an environment not suited to them.

2 . Church or non-government organizations can do some alternatives such as diverting the interest of the female teenagers on sports, civil service and some other activities that can make them occupied rather than engaging in early sex.

      3. Open to contraceptives – Teenagers must be knowledgeable about contraceptives. Those female teenagers who can’t avoid sex must be smart enough to choose contraceptives that matched their needs.

      4. There are still lots of them who could control the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy and that would be the government itself by intensifying
the campaign of “no to teenage pregnancy” by reaching them how remote where they are and educate them how serious to get pregnant at early age.

    • Dear Joy,
I’m delighted and touched with your disclosure as an “experienced” teenage pregnancy. I called it as “experienced” because a mistake of yours was not yet enough instead you’ve got not just another but more mistakes.

Joy, I have a neighbor who have been got pregnant 5 times with different father. Every time she got pregnant she went home from Manila to her mother who also live poorly alone. Five children were been raised by her and with the care of her old mother, a very touching and unbearable existence. Children were been raised hand and mouth.

Every time when my neighbor got pregnant I got the chance to talk at her, to make jokes at her again and again because she got pregnant 5 times!!! I keep reminding her by jokes and said “And again you are pregnant Jannette! Darling, you need to be active in church. There, you can find the real love that you are looking for.”
Yes she did but after some time she give up because she can’t adjust the people that surrounds her in the church and again went back to Manila. After some months she went home and pregnant again. There I told her again the same words: “And again you are pregnant Jannette! Darling, you need to be active in church. There, you can find the real love that you are looking for.” Yes, she did again but after several months she leave the church and went back again to Manila because of the promising working opportunity.

Joy, you are many time blessed than that with my neighbor because you have still the parents with you. Thanks your parents everyday because doing it is not yet enough to repay their goodness.

I know you have been victims of bad promises because you have not met yet the right person that will be called as your own who loves you for health and or sickness.

You know Janette has finally ended to a man a little bit younger than her but truly loves her and told me at last. “Ate, you are right, I found my ideal man at last with the formula I learned from the church, that sex is not love but a gift bestowed only to couples from the most “High” and that is the “Lord” whereas the real love is “God.”
